The world is becoming a more dangerous place. From terrorism and cyber attacks to severe weather and pandemics, traditional threats have been overtaken by more complex, interrelated and dynamic risks – with dramatically increased scope for inflicting harm.

Organisations, too, are changing. They’re a vast and complex machine of social, technological and physical components. Even a single organisation can be part of a diverse, international network of suppliers, partners, investors, customers, citizens, regulators and government departments.

At some point all organisations will be subject to a damaging event. These will vary in scope and impact, but what’s important is how well the organisation can maintain an acceptable level of service for its customers and how quickly they can recover.. They’ll be hit not only by the direct costs of dealing with such an event, but also judged by their stakeholders on how well – or not – they’ve been able to respond.
